Michael Lujan Bevacqua, Ph.D.

Michael Lujan Bevacqua, Ph.D. (Familian Bittot yan Kabesa) taught Guam History and Chamoru language at the University of Guam for 10 years, runs a weekly podcast called Fanachu! and also serves as the co-chair for the decolonization education organization Independent Guåhan. With his brother Jack, they run a creative company called The Guam Bus (www.theguambus.com) that publishes Chamoru language books, comics and learning materials.

While attending the University of California, San Diego to get his Ph.D. in Ethnic Studies he was asked what he wanted his research focus or areas of specialization to be and his response was “Everything Guam and anything Chamoru.” One way that this manifests is through the avid collecting of anything and everything Guam or Chamoru related. He has been collecting Chamoru music, cassettes, vinyl records and CDs for many years now, in 2021 he began working with his son Akli’e’ to digitize his Chamoru vinyl collection and make it available through the Fanachu podcast’s YouTube page.

He has four children and speaks to them only in Chamoru. This presents challenges as children move from Miss Rachel to PS5 consoles to college plans, but with the support of his partner Desiree they work to promote the Chamoru language in the home.
