You have carried the “Torch of Peace and Friendship and the Hafa Adai Spirit” with pride and honor, and I am sure you have earned a special place in Guam’s hearts.

You are truly beautiful and talented Chamorrita!

The best to you,

Cecilia C. Bamba

My Dear Flora,

About The Charfaurus Brothers

To My Friends, The Charfauros Brothers:

I salute you on the occasion of the cutting of your first album of our beautiful Chamorro melodies. You have succeeded where others have tried in putting our language into musical and lyrical composition typical of our Island’s music.

Your uniquely vibrant and enchanting rendition of these melodies expresses most vividly the musical traditions of our people.

This contribution of yours to the perpetuation of this facet of our heritage will be a source of pride and joy for the present generation of Chamorros and those to come.

Again, I salute you!

Sincerely,

Marcial S. Sablan

About the PALASYON RICO VINYL RECORD

The Tropicsette is simply what it is: A combo from the tropics or from America’s newest territory (CNMI) located about 1,550 miles south of Tokyo or 120 miles northwest of Guam. Comprised of gifted and self-taught musicians, the Tropicsette is known for its versatility. The group can serenade any listener with local traditional songs about love, the cultural traditions of the Chamorros and Carolinians, the legends and history of the local people can dish out the latest disco hits or funky music, country and western, latin or melodic songs of the islands from the State of Aloha.

Since the birth of the Tropicsette in 1974, it has seen and undergone a number of facelifts in terms of membership. But despite the changes for the better, the one sole member who stuck it out all the way until we produced this first LP was the Bassman. For those who were once members of this group, we thank you for your contributions and may the good old days be well remembered. We give special thanks to former Tropicsetters: Jess Sasamoto, Pete Duenas, Jr., Herbert DelRosario, Henry Cabrera, Norbert Mendiola, Dave Diaz, Donald Fleming, Ringo Castro, Aldelbert Concepcion and Cris Kaipat.

We ask that we work jointly with other groups to revive a culture that is about to be totally eroded from our people. We hope we will work together toward this end. Our songs are ours to share and we hope that you find the selections in this Album yours to enjoy with loved-ones, friends and relatives, for years to come.

About Minachum Atdao

To write about the Delgado Brothers and this album really puts me in a quandary. On one hand these boys are so fabulous to work with that it ought to be easy. On the other hand, they are well known on the island, even before their first LP “PARA SI JUAN” came out, that much have already been said by the people who knew them… a thousand times or more.

Suffice it to say that the title of this album “MINACHUM ATDAO” is modesty to the ultimate. While I and the many fans of the Delgado Brothers feel that the first album contains quality work, this second release equals it not exceeds that production which would further enhance the Delgado Brothers popularity on the island. This fivesome of boys have rung up an unparalleled strings of local songs that to produce them will take more financial backing than the Corporation can afford presently. Their  collections of songs, adaptations, originals and traditionals is a mirror of their charm, their warmth, their willingness to learn new techniques and take criticism like PROS…and their ability to encourage groups and other local talents to work and put out their best will unalterably raised them to the top of the performing, recording and production list.

I am sure you have met these boys before. Whether in person or in “PARA SI JUAN”… their first release, or in home tape recordings. I hope you are able to continue the relationship, friendship, or what have you, through their subsequent releases, whether in their Christmas and religious LPs…soon to be released, or in some of their upcoming new singles. If you aren’t acquainted with the DELGADO BROTHERS, then I suggest you pick up one of their albums or singles… you have a rare treat in store for you.

I would like to say that this album represents the Delgado Brothers at their best, especially since they had to put up with me not only as the producer and coordinator, but also as a “partial artist”. The Delgado Brothers at their best…writing songs, translating, arranging, SINGING…at their best…for that is what they are and deserve to be …THE TOP LOCAL RECORDING FIVESOME on the island…but most of all because they are five fabulous guys to work with.

-Laling Camacho

delgado brothers minachum atdao vinyl back

To everyone’s surprise, including the producer and coordinator herself, there is quality about the singing of Laling Camacho…a warmth and tenderness that encompasses all who listens. Here in a modest musical setting and backed by the wonderful DELGADO BROTHERs in four (4) members, Laling’s full voice is given full expression, much to her surprise and expectation. Performing on this second DelCam Production, Laling proves beyond all doubts that LOVE for the Guamainians is the THING!

About Meskla Uno 1978

This has got to be Guam’s best yet; for sure it is the best of the Charfauros Bros. recording studios. It is certainly a “first” in more ways than one. Here you find the largest pool ever of talented local vocalists, some of whom you know about others you have never even heard of. Here you discover the largest variety of styles, sounds and techniques all compiled into one single record album to form the widest selection of Chamorro songs. Here is MESKLA UNO the most soothing, catching and enticing mixed Chamorros album of mixed Chamorro personalities never before produced anywhere in the world including Guam.

It is nice to hear again the sound of the ever humorous, the ever popular Mike Laguana. In this MESKLA UNO one cannot deny that Mike keeps sounding better every time. Here also you get to enjoy that sweet, elegant voice of the ever beautiful Terry Rojas. A neat treat and a tribute to her people she is no doubt. But wait, don’t stop now because you are just about to meet and hear the up-and-coming stars-to-be.

The sensational Reyes Brothers have finally come to the scene. Yes, this is the “Reyes Bros.” you have heard so much about and believe you me they are for real. They are good, this is overly apparent, and their performance here speaks well of them, the pride of their home town Talofofoville. Now, you still have to meet the fabulous duet Terry and Mike. Terry Quitugua and Mike Ada are second to none when it comes to substantive Chamorro songs. Together they stand tall and majestic, like a tower of lights among the pebbles along the seashore. They sing so good you can almost taste it. Last but not least, here is Jesse Muna who comes out strong as a bull. Jesse, as a performer, defies description. He chooses to be himself and tries not to sound like anyone else. Because he refuses to imitate, Jesse Muna is honestly and truly the only one of a kind.

CHAMORRO SONG LOVERS< you must all buy a copy of this one and only, first in a series, MESKLA UNO Chamorro song record album.

Introducing "THE COMMONWEALTH"

Terry R. Heston

Terry is the only member of the group who has done any recording. Some of her songs can be found in the album Meskla U no and Casamento. On Guam, she once was the lead vocalist for an all girls band “Terry and the Venus Four”. Following her stint with that group, she began entertaining in some of Guam’s best night clubs and those in the military base. On Saipan, she’s done some singing at the Saipan Grand Hotel and Saipan Continental Hotel. Her talent and unique voice has in more ways than one brightened up each of the songs in this album.

John DelRosario

John is the shy one in the group and who is now the Editor of Saipan’s most widely read newspaper – Examiner. He’s been in and out of various combos on the island. This he did until he got together with Jess in 1974 to become the crowd’s favorite during “Happy Hours” at Continental’s Trader Bar. Though a shy person, he can sing popular and Hawaiian songs to the delight of those who come from the Aloha State. He, Jess and Terry have pooled their talents to come up with this Album.

Jess R.A. Sonoda

The leader of the group, Jess, is a song writer in his own right. Many of the songs in this Album were his own compositions which will be the music of this community for many years to come. Some of the lyrics to these songs were written when Jess was a student in the mainland, some were composed here at home. Jess has done a superb job in putting together songs that describe the beauty of the islands, its turquoise waters and golden beaches, among others. In short, he sings about the beauty of the islands. Entertaining isn’t anything strange to him having once done a stint with a partner for Continental Hotel’s Trader Bar.

To Our Listeners:

It is with pleasure that I present to you The Commonwealth, a musical trio whose songs of the islands is certain to contribute to local efforts to preserve our cultural heritage.

The Marianas has a diamond dozens of local talents, but very few actually come to documenting what they wish to contribute to the fast eroding Chamorro and Carolinian Cultures.

The Commonwealth is one of a few groups who has come this far – realizing a dream through this Album to share with our brothers and sisters throughout the Marianas chain what is inherently part of us – music or songs about the islands, its legends, and its people.

I have no doubt that most, if not all of the songs in this Album would suit your tastes. There’s something for everybody. The Commonwealth join me in presenting to you songs for your listening pleasure. We hope you enjoy them with your family.

GUINAIFEN MANGLO JD CRUTCH VINYL RECORD

Joe crutch Duenas

Joe “Crutch” Duenas is both a familiar face and recognizable voice. You’ve probably heard him at one time or another… on Programma Chamorrita, at a fiesta or an election rally… or maybe he was the guy you heard one night at the movie theatre…the guy singing from his seat before the movie started. That’s because Crutch loves to sing…anywhere, anytime, for anybody.

All his life, Crutch knew he was cut out to be a singer, but it wasn’t until 1974 that he considered doing it for a career. Referred to the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) by his school counselor, Joe laid it on the line: “I love to sing, so I want to be a professional singer.” “Fine,” said DVR, and in 1976 they sent him to the University of Guam to study music. About this time, Crutch was getting some airplay on Programma Chamorrita, and the people were liking the music he and his uncle, Roque Mantanona, were writing. This prompted DVR to sit down with the CHarfauros Brothers to talk about producing a record for Crutch. It was from those talks that this album got its start.

The lyric writing is the joint effort of Joe and his Uncle Roque, who has been passing his craft to Joe (like Roque’s own Uncle Romeo passed it to him). The playing represents a collaboration of Crutch, Joe Taimanglo, Rick Camacho, members of the local band Tugboat, Crutch’s sister Sally, and even the engineers, who stepped out of the booth to play and sing on a few of the tunes.

Three of the songs are Crutch originals: the title cut, “Guinaifen Manglo”, the moving “Ayuda Un Keyao’n Taotao”, Joe’s plea from deep within, and the already poppular “Storian Guinaiyako”/ “Next album,” Crutch says, “I want to write all the tunes.” The other songs come from various sources, ranging from the traditional “Wedding Bells” to jailhouse contry (with some hot picking by Joe Taimanglo), to “Maseha Haf’ Taimano,” an adaptation of Lobo rocker.

There’s something for everyone, young and old alike, on this album. Like we said, Joe Crutch will sing for anyone who’ll listen… or, for that matter, anyone who won’t listen… because he loves to sing. You can see it on his face.

Roque Mantanona
Who is Roque Mantanona?

A most legitimate and appropriate question at this point in time. Most everyone has heard of Roque Mantanona, but very few really know him. Most people remember Roque the Boxer, Roque the vicious prize fighter, Roque the violent and aggressive slugger. They remember, of course, the Roque of yesteryears. The Roque of today is the complete opposite of he whom they remember. He is a dedicated, hard-working, responsible family man; a compassionate husband and a loving father of ten. He has become a music lover appreciative of the world around him, the beauty of nature, man and his environment. As a writer, he employs empathy indiscriminately for as he has learned only then he is able to explore and understand the true feelings and aspirations of others.

Roque Mantanona is a self-taught, self-made Chamorro song writer. He is endowed with poetic qualities very rarely found in any one man. He has authored many songs and poems both in English and in the vernacular. He has written plays for school and village functions and all his works have been enjoyed and loved by all. His ability to write is an inspirational fruit from a very fruitful and unselfish tree of long ago. The tree was in the form of a very dear uncle, Romeo P. Mantanona, who in 1946 inspired Roque to learn reading and writing the chamorro language. Roque remembers the many long lessons he had with uncle Romeo and now admist he would not have made it if were not for those instructional sessions.

Roque has been writing for Joe “Crutch” Duenas for many years now. He has also written for personalities such as Johnny Sablan, Flora Baza, Terry Rojas, Sally Duenas and more. The first song he ever wrote for publication was “Puti Tai Nobio” and Flora Baza sang it in Johnny Sablan’s Casamiento. “Puti Tai Nobio” is a classic example of Roque’s ballad-type work. Ballad is his bag and life in general is his favorite subject.

Roque’s masterpiece is “Y Asaguaho Na Palaoan” which appears in this album. He dedicates this song to his wife, the former Antonia Duenas Francisco of Mangilao because it was she that inspired its creation. Here Roque writes from the heart, what he sees in and feels for his ever loving and caring wife. Here he reminisces the hardships and good times, the sorrow and the happiness they bravely faced together to survive. Who is Roque Mantanona? Yes, this is he.

I'm probably Crutch's biggest fan. I've heard each of these tunes over a hundred times throughout the recording and mixing of this album, and I'm still his biggest fan. Crutch has a spark as well as a voice...he sings from the heart. This is not just some jive to fill the back of the album cover... I'm qualified to say it. I spend a lot of time with Crutch... recording, playing music with him, partying, and just hanging out with him. I'm proud of him because he is a young voice taking deep Chamorro into newer musical forms, amidst cries that the language is dying. My own Guamanian pride makes me feel good about this album...made by "jungle rules" and local dudes, right here at home.

About The Guam Bicentennial Album

This album is dedicated to the American Bicentennial. A “Labor of Love” by our director, composer, arranger and conductor. Scion of a musically prominent family in the Philippines, Nick or “Mr. Music” as he is called in Guam composed “You Remind Me of a Song”” for his wife Pacita, 35 years ago but never set it to paper until now and immediately recorded it. In the album are some of this other compositions which are recorded for the first time such as “America’s Day Begins on Guam”, “Moon over Agana”, “Gachong”, “Guam is Good” and “That’s Chamorro”, all about Guam. Among the selection is “Glist’ning Silver Sands” composed by his son.

Bill James, a gifted, competent and well known singer on Guam can take his place among the greats. Bill had first recorded the popular “Hafa Dai” and “Goddess” several years ago. This is his first and hopefully not his last long playing album. His versatility is proven once again ranging from the unpolished Chamorro Love, Wedding and Picnic Medleys to the majestic “Guam Hymn” which is a crowning glory and a tribute to its composer Ramon M. Sablan, M.D., a pioneer in the written music of Guam, to the contemporary works of Nick Abelardo and the now generation sounds of Guam Is Good”.

The Rondolla accompaniment to the Chamorro songs is traditional and depicts the Spanish influence in the Guamanian music.

Also featured are the “Duendes” the school children of Kamuning Elementary School directed by Nick’s sister Ms. Cecille A. Quizon.

Hope you enjoy listening to the album as it was a real pleasure making it for you.
